Amore Positano

A very dear old friend of mine once humorously suggested that I should have a holiday show, similar to that old classic from the 90's "Wish you were here". So I thought, now I have a forum, why not?...so this is not a TV programme but the best I can do... for now...

With the holiday season fast approaching we are all sitting dreaming of sunnier climates (well, other than those of us that are planning our escape from 5o degrees), adventure, culture or just relaxation or cocktails whilst getting a tan...so I thought I'd choose one of my absolute favourite places to share with you first...

Positano.

It is a magical place.  Four hours' drive south of Rome...the road is a mundane highway affair until you see the silhouette of Mt. Vesuvius towering over Naples...

Positano Day
Positano Day

As you leave this southern Italian metropolis, winding up towards Sorrento and beyond with the beautiful Gulf of Naples spreading out to your right...you pass tunnels and then ascend the hills, the breathtaking sparkling waters of the Mediterranean along the Amalfi Coast come into view...It is like something off a Dolce & Gabbana or Tom Ford advertisement...immaculate...and then as you wind around the road, hugging the hillsides, small Fiat cars and Piaggio scooters swarming around you, Positano comes into view ahead...colours of houses: sun-bleached peach and pink colours clinging to the hillside and unraveling in front of you down to the crystal sapphire blue water...

Postiano has an amazing vibe, tiny streets buzzing with people...excited on arrival you will want to immerse in it and immediately abandon your car in one of the outrageously expensive carparks, or just leave it on the road out of town somewhere, and progress on foot...leaving all of your cares behind...It feels like the quintessential summer holiday destination: practically untouched in the last 50 years but somehow completely chic and the summer place to be at the same time...

There is something for everyone in Positano....whether it be lazing days away on the beach and drinking a cool Sicilian rose, or lounging by the pool and in the cocktail bar in your very best summer couture at Le Sirenuse which is simply one of the coolest hotels I have ever been to, drinking an Aperol Sprtiz and absorbing la belle persone (the beautiful people)...you cannot miss...If you are being spoiled or just want to spoil yourself, you cannot go past Le Sirenuse...the best hotel in town...the view will leave you speechless, the food is, well, Michelin star quality, the surroundings are beautiful, the rooms exceptional (with a price tag to match, of course)...I would also recommend Franco's Bar, right up the top of Positano for a sunset drink...the view is something that cannot be done justice by these words...

I had sandals made for me at Safari Club, Positano...it has been there forever and is a must do for any girl seeking maximum immac-ness...

In that holy grail that is Harper's Bazaar, in May 1953, John Steinbeck the canon of American literature wrote of this amazing town: "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone."

I fully agree with Mr. Steinbeck...and have to say that I could not have said it better.  It is quite simply a magical place for a girl to go.
