Sunshine Accessory

"Sunglasses are like eyeshadow: they make everything look younger and pretty."  (K. Lagerfeld) It is that time of year.  Summer is again on the door step; or if you are here in the Emirates it would be more accurate to say that summer is currently forcing its way through your front door with more vigor than a six-figure earning Avon lady.   And this time of year, depending on where you live of course, brings a matter into serious consideration. Sunglasses.

Done right, sunglasses are an immediate outfit lifter.  An easy win.  So whether your sunnies fall into the "must-have to survive" category, or you simply want to get it right while shopping for your vay-cay clothes; you need to be right across the latest in UV protectors.

Butterfly, cat-eye, round and heart shaped, are all in this season.  But first, a word of caution.  Please don't only buy on the basis of what is in fashion.  The most important thing of all is to buy what suits your face.

So, with that said, this summer the premier looks are cat-eye and round.  I love cat-eye.  A retro throw back to the 1950s and 60s; they are a look that equally at home as you thumb through a Vogue from that era as they are today.  The classic look of the cat-eye is forgiving and generally fairly face flattering.  That flick at the end of the glasses will draw the people's eye up your cheekbone, refining the look of your face.

Slightly less forgiving but very SS16 are round sunglasses.  Again, slightly retro and a development from the more timeless (and safer) aviator look, round glasses will have you right on the summer pulse.  Round glasses well for those with a squarer or more structured face shape as the glasses will soften off those edges.

What have I gone for, you may ask?  Well, I done two things.  Firstly, I have practiced what I have preached, going with one set of cat-eye and one set of round.   What I have also done is to hedge my bets by going with something a little more classic and pricey for the cat-eye pair; and then a more inexpensive, very on-trend round pair.  Bases covered.

So here are some stunning sunglass recommendations (including what I have gone with) for this summer.  Any of these will stop that brow furrowing up in the sun (assisted with a few ml of Botox) and will have you looking immac in the sun.

  • Louis Vuitton - Charlotte:  I treated myself to these little beauties in Venice recently. Totally immac.  Timeless but spot on SS16 with a neat little cat-eye.  Love them totally.  Pricey but worth it:  http://eu.louisvuitton.com/eng-e1/products/charlotte-monogram-mini-008011
  • RayBan Acetate Round Frame:  these are a pretty classic round set of specs.  Born of the Aviator, these will go with anything: https://www.net-a-porter.com/ae/en/product/661616/ray_ban/round-frame-acetate-sunglasses
  • Fendi - Iridia:  these cat-eyes are very, very chic.  I love Fendi and they've got it so right with these. Do it:   https://www.fendi.com/us/iridia-cat-eye-sunglasses-with-pink-gold-corners/p-FOG2745NLF05AP
  • H&M Round Mirrored.  Right at the other end of scale in terms of price-point but if you need a one season wonder, you cannot go wrong with these.  I picked them up for our visit to Sri Lanka last month and they served me very well for the princely sum of US$10: http://www.hm.com/us/product/46851?article=46851-A

So, bring on the rays and heat waves.
