Take A Walk On The Wild Side

I'm heading to Paris for a few days later this week.  In case your wondering, I'm not going for the Euro 16 football.  However, there will hopefully be some fancy footwork involved; less Gareth Bale and more Jimmy Choo. In preparation I've spent some time this weekend with my feet up thumbing my way through the latest issues of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar to ensure I have my finger on the pulse for when I touch down in the world's fashion capital.

The magazines as well as the ready-to-wear Paris fashion week collections (in March) featured heavy doses of urban tribal; basically otherwise known as leopard or animal print in more common parlance.

It's easy, really.  With classics like tribal it is always a case of what goes around comes around.  A printed purchase made now will have you right en vogue for ss16.  And if you buy well your pieces can then hibernate in your closet after this season for a year or two and be reinvigorated when tribal inevitably makes another appearance at Paris fashion week in two or three years' time.  And I can't emphasise that enough: buy well.  An investment in a quality well cut piece, whether a dress, handbag, accessory or pair of shoes, will stand the test of time and the cycles of fashion.  Finish your print off with chunky jewellery - bold gold necklaces and chokers are spot on.

At the top end of the market two designers have a particularly impressive take on African inspiration for ss16: Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana.  The colours are  rusty tones, tribal browns, bottle greens, red and burgundy.  Valentino, with their trademark studded shoes and handbags complement the tribal look to perfection.

Inspiration in hand, I pulled together a few African inspired outfits to get your wild ideas flowing like Victoria Falls.

The high street and couture houses have plenty of tribal right now.  In the famous words of Toto "she's waiting there for you" (from their 1982 hit: Africa - love that song), so get out there, be brave, hit the shops and pick up some print; whether it is leopard, tiger, snake or zebra, you will be sure you be on the trend mark.  Here are a few of my pics for your ss16 prints:

  • Top Shop - Rio Leopard Print Mini Skirt - an excellent take on print, combining emerald green leopard print.  A good length for the summer; always a sexy look.  Get it on to rumble in the jungle and a steal at £20 ($28).  Top Shop.
  • Forever 21 - Rise of Dawn Leopard Pants - for a daring look try these saucy spotty strides.  Hit the gym to get your legs in tip top shape and combine with super high-heels, you will turn heads as you stride into the wild.  £55 ($79).  Forever 21.

  • Charlotte Olympia + Agent Provocatuer - Leopard Print Satin-Silk Headscarf.  A headscarf is always a very stylish look for the day and I love this example.  A nod back to the 1950s a headscarf is timeless, especially in print and a great way to really look like you know what you are doing.  £45 ($64).  Net-A-Porter.
  • Christian Louboutin - Sweet Charity Print Bag - push the boat right out into the Lake Victoria with this wild accessory.  Super expensive, but amazing, immac and you will wear it forever as print comes and goes and boomerangs right back again.  I love this. £869 ($1,238).  Net-A-Porter.
