Having a baby in the UAE

Pregnancy 2.jpg

This week we’ve been to one of our many hospital appointments, this time for our 30-week check-up. Here in the UAE you choose a doctor based on a google search, a recommendation from a friend or a friend of a friend.  Armed with recommendations you then basically visit as many consultants as you can, well, as many as your husband will be dragged to or your health insurer will allow, until you find a doctor who you feel happy with to deliver your bundle of joy.

After much deliberation and visits to random hospitals and clinics in the UK and both Emirates we’ve decided on Dr Elsa de Menezes Fernandes.  Dr Elsa is a respected Dubai-based Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist who was highly recommended. Upon meeting her she filled us with confidence from the first appointment with her professionalism and enthusiasm for her work. She is up-beat and very reassuring.  When we met she told us that she co-wrote ‘8 fears of childbirth answered’ with the blog ‘Just Kidding’.  This is definitely worth a read. In Dr. Elsa’s experience, a woman’s main fears about childbirth are answered here… http://blog.justkidding-me.com/8-fears-about-childbirth-answered/

I think my two main fears from the list are #6 – not being able to cope with the pain, and #8 -not making it to the hospital on time (the hospital is 75 miles away).  My fears are based on my experience during Cole’s birth as he was 3 weeks earlier than I had expected and it hurt… A Lot!!

Our next appointment is in 4 weeks; it is getting really close now!

Are you having a baby in 2018? Please get in-touch as I’d love to hear your story as I share mine.
